Most Important Information!
At the May meeting, CSAGSI members in attendance will vote for one Board Member and four Officers to manage our Society for the next two years. The nominating committee has carefully selected the following candidates, and feels they will be the most qualified members to get the job done:
Paul Nemecek, running for president, has done an outstanding job as vice president and has taken our library to new heights as our library chair.
Mary Ellen Panoch Zuro, running for vice president, has done an outstanding job as hospitality chair and has been invaluable at previous board meetings.
Adrian Charniak, running for treasurer, has already proven she can do an excellent job as treasurer during the past two years.
Sharon Davis, running for corresponding secretary, has proven she is up to that task and many others during the past two years.
Dien Zeigler, running for recording secretary, is a new person to run for office in our society and is very capable, as she was a member of the Workshop committee. We are sure she can add quite a bit to our board meetings.
George Rokos, running for director, already has quite a bit of experience at the board meetings, as he is the former treasurer and our special projects chair.
During this summer, there will be many ethnic events. Please participate in as many as you can, especially with your children. They need to be exposed to their heritage as early and as often as possible, in order to preserve the efforts of their grandparents and great-grandparents.
Our beloved Bohemian National Cemetery, where many of our ancestors are buried, will hold a Memorial Day service on Monday, May 30, at 9 AM at the Cemetery. Located at Foster & Pulaski in Chicago. Please attend if you can, it is a beautiful and touching service.
Another local event of note is the memorial service, dedicated to the village of Lidice, Czech Republic. This Czech village was destroyed and all of its inhabitants were killed or sent to concentration camps by Hitler. The service is held in Crest Hill, near Romeoville, on Sunday, June 12. It lasts about one hour and should not be missed. The Czechoslovak American Congress is sponsoring the service and may have a bus to and from the event. Please call Vera Wilt at 708/442-4444 for more info.
Finally, the annual Czechoslovak American Congress’ Family Picnic on Sunday, July 31. This is a family outing with entertainment for kids of all ages. Bring your own picnic basket or purchase the delicious food that will be on sale. Homemade potato pancakes, sausages, hot dogs, kolackys, bakery, ice cream, corn on the cob, soda, beer & water will be available for purchase. Come and visit with the United Moravian Societies, the Moravian Cultural Society, the Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery, the First Czechoslovak Garden Club, the CSAGSI, and many other groups too numerous to mention. CSAGSI as a participating member organization will be responsible for the sale of coffee and bakery at the picnic. We need some volunteers to help staff the table for an hour or two during the event. If you can help, please call Sharon Davis at 708/749-2558.
