CSAGSI President's Message
July 2004
I hope all of you are enjoying this summer season and all of the good things summer has to offer. Please try to attend as many ethnic events in your area that you can. Your support and participation are crucial to the success of these ethnic events, wherever you live.
Locally in the Chicago area, we have the 20th annual Czechoslovak American Congressf Festival and picnic on Sunday, July 25th at the National Groves #1 & #2 at 29th Street and Des Plaines Avenue in North Riverside. Good food, good fun, and great entertainment will be available for the whole family to enjoy. If you plan on attending, we still need a few volunteers to staff our bakery booth and/or our membership table.
Many of you are visiting the Czech and/or Slovak Republics this summer, I wish you the very best at finding your relatives and your ancestors. Even if you do not find what or who you are looking for, you will have had an enjoyable vacation to one of the friendliest and most picturesque places on this earth.
Our Bohemian National Cemetery project is making great progress. Almost half of the 116,000 burial names are indexed and we are going into the next phase of the project. We do not yet have a completion date, but are working as fast as we can. My thanks go out to the many volunteers who are working hard on this project.
Our CSAGSI library has expanded to include the entire top floor of the T. G. Masaryk School. We were at our capacity in the single room and unable to find space for the many new books and periodicals we receive. Paul Nemecek, our librarian, and other volunteers are working on the expansion over the summer to have it ready for your use in the fall. Please feel free to use it as often as needed. It is open on the second Saturday of the month, September through June from 10 AM to 2 PM.
We now have a gCzech-Americanh television show in Chicago on UHF channel 28, every Sunday afternoon at 4:30 PM. It is followed by a half hour of Slovak television programming. For those of you out of the Chicago area who wish to see it, you can see it on the web at www.catvherald.com. They are just starting out and in need of funds to continue this program. If you are able to send them a donation, all of the Czech/Slovak community in Chicago will appreciate it.
We are still seeking volunteers for all sorts of things. We are planning to have a Conference/Workshop in the spring; we need a new Koreny editor; our Christmas party still needs a few helping hands; our Cemetery project never has enough helpers; and we will be seeking new officers for our Society next summer. If you can help with anything, either locally or from a distance, please contact one of our volunteer coordinators: Evelyn Fergle at Czechekf@aol.com OR Chris Visconti at dagochek@aol.com with your capabilities and limitations. All assistance is welcomed.
Have a safe and happy summer. I hope to see most of you at the picnic on the 25th.
Bill
