Hello to all and welcome to summer. The weather is getting warmer and ethnic festivals and events will be happening all over the world. I urge you to attend as many as you are able, and especially to bring your children and grandchildren. They need to be introduced to their heritage as soon as possible in order to keep our heritage alive.
Joe Hartzel and his committee have started work on a children’s project to help them learn more about their heritage at an early age. If you have any input to help them along, or for more information, please contact Joe by email at jzel@aol.com.
Memorial Day Services will be held at Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago on Monday, May 31st. Details are in the yellow insert of the newsletter.
The Lidice Memorial Service will be held in Crest Hill, IL on June 6 at 11 AM. Please try to attend. For more information, call Vera Wilt @ 708/442-4444.
Our annual Czech American Congress’ festival/picnic will be held on Sunday, July 25th at National Groves # 1 & 2 at 28th Street & Des Plaines Avenue in North Riverside, IL. For more information, contact John Pritasil at 708/579-9433 or Jim Hedderman at 708/579-5492.
I am including in this newsletter, “Heritage Happenings” the first issue of the Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery’s Newsletter. If you wish to receive future issues, contact the Friends group at the address or email in their newsletter.
The Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery group held two tours of the Cemetery on May 1 and both were very well attended (over 100 persons). The tours were held as a fundraiser for the Cemetery. FoBNC will hold more tours in the future as well as other types of fundraisers throughout the year. BNC is one of very few non-profit ethnic/fraternal cemeteries in the country and government regulations and the economy have both contributed to the cemetery going in the red. I know many of us have relatives buried there and if you would like to make a donation to the Cemetery to assist them in their time of need, please send your donation to: Bohemian National Cemetery 5255 N. Pulaski Road Chicago, IL 60630.
Any amount you can send will be appreciated.
There are many other events coming up this summer. Too many for me to list here, so please watch your Newsletters and our Koreny for announcements. If you wish to announce events in your area in either publication, please send the notices as soon as possible as each publication has early deadlines.
