CSAGSI President's Message
July 2003
Happy Summer To All !
Congratulations to all of the candidates who volunteered to accept an office as an Officer or as a Board Member of our Organization and whom the members attending the June meeting unanimously elected. The slate of candidates as listed in the last Newsletter was elected, and will be installed at our August meeting and will take over their new duties on September 1, 2003.
For those of you using computers to trace your ancestors, we have learned that MyFamily.com will acquire Genealogy.com and then combine with Rootsweb.com in order to provide more & better services to those genealogists using their websites.
Below are a few of the Czech, Moravian, & Slovak Events coming up. There were four pages of events, festivals, and genealogy meetings/conferences posted on the bulletin board at the June meeting. Please attend as many ethnic events as you can and PLEASE bring your children and grandchildren. They are the future of our ethnic heritage and should be encouraged to join in the fun and embrace their heritage as soon as possible.
On July 27th, the Czechoslovak American Congress (CAC) will have their annual fundraising Festival/Picnic at Forest Preserve Grove #4 in North Riverside. (27th & Desplaines Avenue) from 11 AM until dusk. Bring the kids for games & prizes. Bring the rest of your family and friends for some fun, and to enjoy the various forms of entertainment that will be provided. Food (potato pancakes, hot dogs, corn on the cob, ice cream, kolackys, etc.) and drinks (soda pop, coffee, water & beer) will be available for sale, or bring your own. EVERYONE is welcome to attend, and you do not need to be a member of any organization. As a member of the CAC, CSAGSI has again volunteered to operate the coffee and bakery booth at this picnic. Volunteers are needed to assist in passing out the bakery and pouring the coffee in this booth. If you are attending and can donate an hour or so to help out, please contact Sharon Davis, our Picnic chairperson, at 708/484-5118.
On August 10th, the United Moravian Societies will hold their first annual picnic from noon to 6 PM, at the same location. I do not have many of their details at this time but most of the above information applies to them also. For more info, please call Yvette Bobcik at 815/588-1279 or email her at R-Bobcik@msn.com.
On September 14 to 21, the Chicago Genealogical Society is sponsoring a “RESEARCH TRIP” to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. I do not have a contact number at this time.
On September 20 & 21, the Berwyn Park District will sponsor a bus trip to the Czech & Slovak Museum & the Amana Colonies near Cedar Rapids in Iowa. The main exhibit at the Museum is titled “Glass from Behind the Iron Curtain”. There will be various glass pieces on display from the Czech & Slovak Republics. There are several other museum exhibits. For more info, please call Richard Zarr at 708/795-2892.
On September 27th & 28th, the United Moravian Societies is having their annual Moravian Day Festival in Countryside, IL, featuring Lanzhotcanka, a Moravian entertainment group. For more info, please call Joe Borysek at 708/562-2307.
For our Rusyn members, CSAGSI has donated to the Carpatho-Rusyn Society for their project “Aksija Vista.” It is the story of the Lemko Rusyns who were forcibly shipped to western Poland by Polish Communists in 1947.
Our Bohemian National Cemetery is forming a group of volunteers to be known as “Friends of the Cemetery”. The purposes of this group are: to coordinate various fundraising efforts, to assist in keeping our Cemetery the beautiful place is has always been, and to begin a Cemetery Newsletter. Our Director, Evelyn Krenek Fergle has been selected to be the first chairperson of the group. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or if you can help with this project, please call her at 248/922-1385, or at CZECHEKF@aol.com. There are currently six or seven persons on the founding committee.
I am hoping to see all of you at the Picnic on July 27th, or at another event.
Bill
