CSAGSI President's Message
April 2003
My congratulations and thanks to our new Koreny editor, Jill Spealman. Her first issue is interesting, and very well done. The blue “tear out” index to previous Koreny articles, provided by Paul Nemecek and Bob Baumruk, is equally well done and helpful to all. Our Board of Directors has decided at the last meeting to end the confusion over the spelling of our KORENY. It has had a hacek over the R and a silent hacek over the N. This was to honor both the Czech and the Slovak spellings, although no such word exists in either language as it was written. Since we are an American Society, they will anglicize the spelling and it will now be “Koreny” with no haceks over any letters.
For those who are interested, Bohemian National Cemetery will be having a guided Spring Tour of their facility soon, but the date is not yet set. Please contact the cemetery at 773/539-8442 or 708/788-8442 for more information.
Please note the following dates now so you will be able to attend the events below.
Bohemian National Cemetery will have their annual Memorial Day Services on May 26th at 9 AM. Coffee & kolacky will be available before the services, in the office. Considering our involvement in Iraq, now is an excellent time for all of us to pay tribute to our fallen servicemen by attending this or some other memorial service on that day.
On May 28th through the 31st, there will be a genealogy Conference in Pittsburgh, sponsored by the NGS. For more info:

On June 8th, the Czechoslovak American Congress will be hosting the annual Memorial Services in Crest Hill, to honor the victims of the massacre at Lidice, CZ on June 10th 1942. Those of you who have seen and been moved by Jerri Zbiral’s video will understand the significance of this memorial. PLEASE try to attend if you can.
On June 16th through the 18th, the Tazewell County Gen. Society will have a bus trip to the Allen County Library. For info call 309/925-3825 or 309/352-5374 or email to
tcghs@email.com.
On July 18th through the 20th, FEEFHS is holding a conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. For more info:
http://feefhs.org.
On July 27th, the Czechoslovak American Congress will have their annual picnic at Forest Preserve #4 in North Riverside. (27th & Desplaines Avenue). Bring the kids for games & prizes. Bring the rest of the family for some fun and enjoy the entertainment.
This September 20, the Berwyn Park District will sponsor a bus trip to the Czech & Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, IA. The exhibit is called “Glass from Behind the Iron Curtain”. It will have various glass pieces on display from the Czech & Slovak Republics.
There are many more ethnic and genealogy related events going on this year, but space will not allow more in this message to you.
Due to the rising costs in paper and postage for the Newsletter and Koreny, this fall we will have to increase the membership fee for the first time in seven years. To make it as painless as possible, we are raising the cost of the individual membership to $20.00 and elevating its status to that of a family membership.
Our Spring Conference held on March 29th was a big success, thanks to our volunteers who worked so hard, and to our co-chairs of the event, Joe Hartzel & Gladys Wheeler. About 180 persons attended, many were from out of state.
We have celebrated our 7th anniversary of the founding of CSAGSI on March 9th.
As a Society we are in excellent condition, as we are growing larger every year.
Bill Hosna
