Great Chicago Links of the "Pretty Interesting" Kind

Here are some links that don't fit into any of the other categories

  • Even cheap Bohemians should consider having their ancestor's names engraved on the wall of honor at Ellis Island. Read about that and other goings on at The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. website.
  • If maps are your thing, The Gold Bug might interest you. In addition to its map reproductions, they distribute a PC product called, Centennia which is a "complete software Historical Atlas of Europe and the Middle East from 1000 to 1993 A.D."
  • If you think one of your ancestors was a Holocaust victim whose family assets were plundered, you can view some of the account names published by the Swiss government on their dormant accounts page.
  • Online telephone books can help you find others who share a surname you're researching. Here are two of our favorites:
    • Swtichboard (TM) is a free nationwide residential and business directory.
    • Telephone directories on the WEB is an index of several national phone directories available on the WEB.
    • Search CZ is CZ telephone search page. Try your luck...if you speak Czech. :-)
    • InforSpace's Reverse Lookup can help you find someone for whom you have only a phone number. (However, when I tried the famous Chicago number, 588-two-three-hundred, it returned no matches!!!)
  • The Family Tree Maker Family Finder Index is a little bit of a tease, but at least you can learn if specific records relating to a name you're researching exist before ordering one of their CDs.
  • The Social Security Death Index (SSDI). Nothing more need be said! And when you're done searching the SSDI, go here to see what it all means and learn how to order a copy of the original SSN application!
  • The USGenWeb Project is worth having a look.
  • If you're looking for anything, there's always the Internet stand-by search engines like Yahoo! and HotBot. But have you heard of The Search Spaniel? It's one of the latest search engine which performs searches using several search engines. Like the old commercial says, try it, you'll like it!
  • If pivo is to your liking (and if not, why not?) "pop open" the Czech Treasures Tour Featuring Breweries and Castles page!

  • ourtimelines.com lets you enter dates for your ancestor (or you) and builds an individual timeline for events in that period. It even lets you enter personal events in your ancestor's life and those will be added into the time line. Print or copy it to use in your own genealogy
