Please somebody help me find the location of the rental, leased or pauper graves in Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois. I have been looking for years and just hit a brick wall everytime. My great grandmother Katrina Sabatka was buried in one in 1879 and no one can tell me where it is.Certainly there must be some old maps of this section? As I have discovered all graves are perpetual and protected by law, so why wont they tell me where she is?Thank you so much for your time, Nancy Hejka

Anyone know what the Czech organizations were, that had the following initials? Date: around 1920.

K. P. a D.
R. a D. C.

The "a" means "and", and I suspect that the "C" is "Czech"...

I am a member of CSAGSI but live in Washington State. I would love to visit but distance and health issues make that impossible. I have some questions and hope someone can help.

I like having reference books, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has purchased research material only to find that it has nothing to help MY search. Would it be possible for someone to tell me if the following names are in The Denni Hlasatel Obituary Index: Nikodem, Placko, Hudacek, Sedjo, Beechan?

Also, in the Member's Only section you have a Surname index but they are in order of surname of the person DOING the search, so you have to go through pages looking at hundreds (or it just seems like hundreds) of names - easy to miss something. Is there a way to search for one surname and get a list of those looking for the same surname?
Thanks for your help. Faith

In the 1920 census, my bohemian grandfather (Joseph A. Benda b.1888)indicated his occupation was "Constable" of the City of Cicero, IL. Does anyone know what job description would mean in 1920? I originally thought it was some sort of policeman or security person, but now I am not so sure. Any thoughts? In 1930, he owned a restaurant or "tavern" or "saloon". It varies depending on the record. Co-owned with his father-in-law, Vojtech Albert Vanourek. Does anyone where I can dig up records of those types of establishments in the early 1930's? Thank you, Sallie Benda-Wald.

Wow - what a great website. I have my 98 year old aunt, Marie Zeman Marik, living with me here in Texas. She and my father grew up on the south side of Chicago - for many years on Robey Avenue, which she says later turned into Damon Ave, and much later on Campbell Avenue. They attended Robert Fulton Elementary and graduated from Lindblom. My aunt worked many years at Wilson & Co., and must have been an accomplished bowler as she still has trophies that are inscribed Chicago City Champions. In her thirties she married Joe Marik, who worked for AT&T. My father's name was Charles Zeman - he was a supervisor for the Chicago Park District. They also had a brother, Joe. I have heard stories about the area my entire life, from my dad, my aunt, and many of their southside friends who relocated with them to Ruskin, Florida, where I grew up. I believe there are still relatives in Chicago, some who came to Florida in the 1960's when I was little. They would have come from my grandmother's side, the Novak's ( I know, that name is kinda like Smith :)). The names that my aunt very vividly remembers are Jeanette and Marion. Jeanette married Joe Stuiber. We have a number of pictures that I believe are all from the Stuiber family. The names on a few of them are Ronnie, Richard, Paul, and Janice, who was a nurse. They seemed to be teenagers and young adults in the 1960’s and early 70’s, when the pictures stop. I realize this is a long shot, but if we still have family in the area, I thought they might see this posting and respond. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to drop as many details as possible in the hopes of jogging someone's memory.

I have been in contact with very distant relatives in Nosalov, Czech Republic. They are going to help me find information about my branch of the Kallis/Kalis family. We email and send pictures of our sides of the family. I did send them some links with pictures of the Grundy and Will County areas of what it looked like back when my ancestors lived there. I thought it would be fun to find links, for them, of Chicago from the 19th Century that would be of interest to Czechs, preferably written in Czech. Are there any such links?

I was searching for relatives at Bohemian National last weekend and found something unexpected. We have a family plot there that has 3 headstones which include a total of 6 people's names. It turns out that there were 13 people buried in this plot. The other 7 were unmarked. Something to keep in mind when looking for lost relatives. Perhaps it was traditional to do this to save money or fit more people into the same space?

Hello, I am searching for any information on the Piróg surname. My great grandfather was Joseph Piróg from Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland/Russia b.1889 d.1953 Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was married to Ksemia (Celia) Papke. Joseph had four brother's: Martin, Walter, Peter, and John, and their father's name (my great great grandfather) was Leon or Leonard Piróg. John and Peter I know came to the US, but Martin and Walter stayed in Poland. Peter's last name stayed Piróg; John's last name was changed to Pirok as was my great grandfather's. If anyone has more info. to add to this family, it would be greatly appreciated. I have more than enough info. on our family in the US, but need help with finding family still in Poland/Russia. Other surnames we are researching in our family are Kochnuk, Papke, Derbowicz?, Sidorek?

I am looking for the geneology of Karel Havlicek, Czech journalist. I am most interested in knowing the names of his brothers, if he had any, and his father and uncles and cousins. I know his wife and daughter's names, but cannot find any other information about his family.

The reason: My great grandfather is Thomas Havlicek (born 1842 near Prague). Family oral history says we are related to Karel, but I have not been able to find the link. Thomas came to the United States and married Mary (1880 census shows "Minna") and they had four daughters, whom I would also like to find descendents. The daughter's names are Mary (b.1868), Sophia (b.1879), Emilia (b.1873) and Augusta (b.1875). They lived in Chicago on W. 16th Street (1880 Census). They divorced and Thomas married by great grandmother in 1884 in Chicago and then moved to Minnesota and then Washington state.
On Thomas's death certificate, it says his parents names were Jacob and Mary.
Please email me if you have information about any of my family. Thank you!

I've been trying to learn what I can about Czechs in Croatia, as that is where both of my paternal grandparents came from. The Denni Hlasatel death notice for my paternal grandfather shows him coming from "Ivanove Selu" (Ivanovo Selo). The notice for my great grandfather shows him coming from "kraj Daruvar", which I believe could also have him coming from Ivanovo Selo.

My grandfather's WWI draft card listed him as being born in "Pemia, Craachion" (or perhaps "Croachion"). This has always mystified me, as I haven't been able to determine what/where this "Pemia" might be.

Now I've found a Czech-language page on the Czech minority in Croatia, at:
http://www.svet.czsk.net/clanky/svet/chorvatsko.html

The following passage caught my eye:

Z vesnic, které byly založeny českými kolonisty pod rakouskou vojenskou správou v takzvané Vojenské hranici, zůstalo české obyvatelstvo jenom v Ivanově Sele, kterému se dodnes říká "Pémie". Podle posledního soupisu obyvatel v roce 1991 se k české národnosti v Chorvatsku hlásilo přes 13.000 osob.

The second sentence gives a census of 13,000 Czechs in Croatia as of the 1991 tally. The first sentence I can't quite translate exactly - it says something about how Czechs came to Croatia under military administration, and to this day the name "Pémie" is applied to either the people or the village Ivanovo Selo.

Can anyone translate this passage? From the Wikipedia page for "Czechs in Croatia", I've read that the word "Pemci" is applied to such folks. Is this the same as "Pémie"? Or is "Pémie" a Czech name for Ivanovo Selo - which itself sounds rather like a Russian name.

I've seen at least one indication somewhere (should have saved the reference) that indicates that Ivanovo Selo is the oldest of the Czech settlements in Croatia. I'll post whatever else I find on this, when I get a better picture.

I finally found my grandfather's gravestone at Bohemian National. Much of the lettering has been worn by 100 years of rain, but I could figure out most of the wording.

One thing I can't translate is a short phrase that looks something like "sai sladce, duchy". I believe that this is saying "[do something] sweetly, spirit" - can anyone offer guidance on a translation?

I have been trying to find my mothers parents without much luck. I do know something about them, but not enough. My grandmother Mary/Marie married a Vaclav (or James, name americanized) Smetana. I found where he came to America on the S.S. Lessing 1n 1881 with my ggrandfather Josef and my ggrandmother Barba? and his 4 brothers. Barba died in childbirth on the ship and the fourth brother only lived about 1 1/2 years. On some census' my gfather is listed as coming from Bohemia, and on others from Austria. My mother always told me they were Bohemian and both came from Prague. But they could have come from a small village near Prague. Question one is, how can I find this out? I have one piece of information (a clue I guess) on my great grandfather that shows he married Barba who already had 2 daughters and they were born in Prague Tabor, Austria. I'm thinking that in those days, people didn't move around a lot like they do today, so maybe he was from there or nearby. That's where the information stops on him. How can I find out if that is where he is from? My grandmother is much harder to find. I was lucky to find an obituary on her, and it said her maiden name was Mertl - if the informant was correct. I can find no information on this name except 2 people who were born in Illinois on census records but the name is spelled Mertel on them and the child Mary was born in Illinois and Wisconsin. (My gparents did live in Illinois as we do now.) Also, at one time I thought her maiden name was Hempel because of a postcard I discovered that started out "Hello sister", and it was from a Hempel. The Hempels lived in Minnesota, and I have the feeling that she did too before she became married. I believe one or more of my gfathers brother/s may have had a farm in Minnesota, but I haven't been able to prove that either. There were several pictures of her with the Hempel family but she is not on any census as a Hempel. I'm going to Prague in June, so if anyone has any ideas for me I'd appreciate it. Also, where are the correct places to go in Prague to find out information? I saw on the web where I could hire someone to take me around, but there would be no guarantees of finding anything. The cost is around 300.00 a day, and I wouldn't mind that if I didn't come up empty handed. That's the Bohemian in me, I guess. I know you should always talk to your ascendants first, but guess what... that's me and my sister as we are the oldest and we only have 2 cousins and they are as clueless as we are. I'd like to thank you in advance for any replies to my questions. I'll appreciate any answers I get.

Joseph Frank Stork, b. 1883 in Albrechtice (Olbersdorf) Austria/Bohemia but considered himself from Czech. He came to the US in 1903 on the ship Cassel out of Bremen, Germany. I know nothing about his family and he would never discuss them with the rest of us. Only that they were probably killed in WW II. We know he had a brother and nephew and was catholic. I know there are several Albrechtice towns but I tend to believe Albrechtice, judicial district town in Silesia, district Krnov (Jaegerndorf), 992 inh. (1880) might be the correct one to write. However, I don't know how to address or to who. Can anyone help?

Hello, I am at a dead end in researching my family tree. I have traced back to a Michael Posipanko who I believe immigrated in 1887ish. He was a coal miner in Mt Carmel PA, possibly married to a Susie Evanek. If you have any information or suggestions, I would be very appreciative. Thank you.

For all the people interested in Denni hlastel, Newberry Library in Chicago has bound volumes of this paper. However, they do not circulate -you would have to visit the library. I don't know what their mail request policy is regarding copies.
If you have a library card from you local public library, you can put in an interlibrary loan request for the particular rolls of microfilm you are interested in from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield. There is probably a mail fee but I doubt it would come to $10 a roll. Their interlibrary loan policy should be explained on their website.

Does anyone know of any pictures and/or info for a hotel in downtown Braidwood, Illinois? It was next to or nearby the old City Hall. My ggg aunt Emma Kallis was a cook there from approximately 1900 to her death in 1933.
Also does anyone know anything about Andrew Markert in Wilmington, Illinois. The 1880 census has my ggg aunt Mary Kallis listed as a servant. There are quite a few women listed as servants. And men listed as laborers. One man is listed as a brewer. The next residence is George Markert, listed as a brewer. A young man named William Kallis is listed as a servant. I do not know if he is a cousin to Mary, Emma and my gg grandma Elizabeth Kallis. Did the Markert's have a commercial farm or brewery? Some Bohemian employee's I found were Kyle Roech(not sure if correct surname spelling), Jerman(not sure if correct given name spelling) and Frank Neizel(not sure if correct surname spelling). There may be other Bohemians, as Mary is listed as being born in Prussia. She was actually born in Illinois to Bohemian parents. Markert name is spelled as Marker in census.
My gg grandfather, Frank Kallis is said to have been a bartender and organ player at the Catholic church. What are some old bars that are still in existence in the area? Also how can I find church records that might have records of him as being an organ player?

Thanx,
Kathy

I'm looking for any information on a Michael Rubacky who was born on Oct. 14,1885. He is my great-grandfather Joseph Rubacky brother. The only information I have on him is a World War I draft card says that he was living in Chicago, IL. I have trying since 1991 to located him. All memebers of The Rubasky & Rubacky Family are gone. So any information on The Rubacky or Rubasky Family memebers in Chicago area would be a big help. Please send an e-mail if you should find any infomation on this family.

I have recently acquired a copy of a book, Obrázkové Dejiny Národa Ceskoslovenského - A Pictorial History of the Czechoslovakian Nation,
The author is František Hrnčíř and Anton Macht; published at Prague by J. Svátek; 1924.

Would this be of interest to any of the folks on this board? It does have a huge amount of pictures and 2 maps as well. I do not know anything more as to the contents as it is all written in the Czech language(?).

I do have pictures of this book if needed, but did not want to clog up your messege boards. Please contact me via email if you have an interest in this book.

First ... getting copies of notices from Denni Hlasatel. I contacted IHRC and they could help me with one and didn't have the issues for some other dates. I contacted the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and they want $10 for each one (so I got one) and this is a bit steep ... I know of 2 other entries that interest me. Does anyone know of a different archive that holds back issues of Denni Hlasatel and it more affordable?

Second ... a gracious person who saw my translation inquiry has helped me out by translating a death notice and related article. That assistance was most appreciated! :-)

Diane :-)

Hello,

I have some notices from Denni Hlasatel that are not in English! Any suggestions for who or what affordable service a genealogist can use to get these translated? I have a death notice in a box and a small article, same person!

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Diane :-)

Regarding Don DiSante's inquiry about Luther St. My mother lived at 2612 Luther St. (born in '32). She said the grocery store was in the middle of the block across the street (in the 40's) but was later converted to a house (before the 60's when I may have remembered). There was also a pie factory that converted to a penny candy/ice cream/bread/milk type store across the empty lot from 2612 on the same side of the street. She remembers saloons on each end of the block and one in the middle ("one on our side at Rockwell and the other two across the street"). Her family was Polish but they had a Slovak boarder upstairs named Ann Hroback.

I am writing my family history and wonder how I might find out the length of a train trip from Plzen to Prague in the 1880's. Then how one would have gone from Prague to Bremen, Germany whether by rail or boat, and how long this journey would be as well. I am trying to paint a picture about the process the emigrant went through to emigration and how long it took. Thanks!

Answer for Dan Miller: These are published by the same person/group. Denni means 'daily' and Nedele means 'Sunday". I doubt, but am not sure, if any papers were published only with the name Hlasatel.

Greetings!

I am researching the activities of a Czech journalist in America, Antonin Palecek. He published a number of things in Hlasatel. Unfortunately, I see Hlasatel, Denni Hlasatel and Nedelni Hlasetel. If anyone is familiar with these publications, could they tell me if they are the same, just published different days (with Hlasatel being the main title)? Are they different papers? Did Denni Hlasatel come before Nedelni Hlasatel (in other words, did a daily paper become a weekly or biweekly paper)? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!
