Aboubakr Houha asks on 11/29 "Any relation with HOUHA leaving in states and ex Checkoslovakia."
Aboubakr, at least 26 people named Houha are living in the United States today. Several earlier immigrants named Houla died in Chicago in the early 1900's. It will be difficult to determine any relationship to those in Algeria named Houla.

Carole Nebert Delozier asks on 11/29 "Any help with a general area to start looking for her homeland would be appreciated."
Carole, I would suggest finding a Czech obituary for your grandmother. The only surname listed in the index of obituaries published in the Denni Hlasatel Czech newspaper is a Magdalena Neberth (obit. 2/14/21). Same family?
As the spellings you provide are not shown at all in the index above, it would possibly suggest these were Slovak names. Good researching.

Is is possible to determine an area of origin for a surname? My gr-grandmother Kathrina "Katie" Rebolt (or Reboldt) lived in Chicago from 1880 until her death as Katie Nabert (or Nebert/Niebert) in 1914. She is shown on records as both "Bohemian" and "Austrian". I am not sure if she was Czech or Slovac. As far as I know she was Catholic. Any help with a general area to start looking for her homeland would be appreciated.

Mike Pierce asks on Nov. 20 "Can anyone in the CSAGSI community tell me the significance of the two-twisted tale upright lion in the crest (which in the upper left corner of the CSAGSI logo)."
Mike according to legend, the two-tailed lion has been the emblem of the Czech state since the mid-twelfth century. The King back then apparently liked this symbol to represent his state. I believe the one-tailed lion was already in common use.
I did read once a legend saying that the King's lion got his tail split by the sword of the opponent in a battle. Yes ,the King won the battle. Makes a nice story.

Bonnie, The CSPS today is called "CSA Fraternal Life". They are located in Oak Brook, Illinois. Application forms are no longer on file at the CSA. The only possible information would be upon his death his name would be listed in their monthy publication along with some basic information, amount of insurance, possibly the cause of death. The spelling may be incorrect. I saw it on an old map that belonged to a family member. I recall that it's in NE Bohemia. her family name is Petrick but some family members used Petrich.

I just recently returned from Czech Republic after assisting in genealogical research. I have found the Okresny a Statni Archiv (County and State Archive) found normally in the county seat of each county to be of great help.Research assistants are very helpful and they are often furtther assisted by english speaking college students doing inturn work for their degree in history. There is no charge for their help and copy service is provided free. However, I do recommend giving a small tip to the inturns to help offset their living expenseswhile doing inturn assignments. The 1910 Census record for Bohemia is an exceptional source of information that can provide more information about former residences and places of birth of citizens rcorded in the census. The census is so detailed it covers down to the last chicken the family owned. Consequently, it gives an exceptional view of how the each family lived.

A member asked, "I am hoping to find a notice in the Bohemian language newspaper "Denni Hlasatel" published in Chicago in 1907 (kept at the Chicago Public Library) for the bride, Anna KARLOVSKA. If anyone has used the newspaper, is it indexed?" -- CSAGSI has indexed over 80,000 obituary entries. Have a look at the CSAGSI store for this publication. A far as notices of marriage, I don't believe they are indexed (if they are even published at all). By the way, there are two obituary listings for Anna Karlovska (though she would have a different name after marriage ): Anna Karlovska, 29 Oct 1918 and Anna Karlovska, 31 May 1904.

Question for the Webmaster. As a newcomer to the Society I have read most of the A&A archives with some intrest. I note that many people over the years have asked many of the same questions I would like to ask such as "Where can I find lists of names of people buried in the Bohemian National Cemetary?" or "Where can you purchase copies of the 'Czech Immigration List?'". If these questions are answered is there a source for the answers? Or do I need to contact each individual questioner to see if their question was answered? Also, I sent a check for membership and a donation to the Library in late July. How long should I anticipate waiting for a reply from the Society?

Last year, I went to the CSAGSI library in Berwyn/Cicero and found out quite a bit of information. What was very helpful, were the books from the Bohemian National Cemetery, having the age and addresses, I was able to match up quite a few of my relatives. I made copies of the pages with the last names of the relatives. Since then, I have had other leads with different last names. My question is, Is there somewhere else to look at those books besides at the library. I don't live close so it is quite a drive for me. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

Hello, My name is A. Myles Stastny and I am in need of your help in finding information about my great-grandparents. My great-grandfather was Vaclav Stastny (born 1848 and died 1929)and my great-grandmother was Katerina ___?___ (born in 1847 and died 1909) and both are burried in the Bohemian National Cemetary in Chicago. I know that Katerina died early and my great-grandfather remarried. They had my grandfather (Adolph Otto Stastny, but I don't know who the rest of their children were. Somewhere, Mary E. Horvorka belongs in our family along with someone's two Stastny brothers. One was John, and I believe he became a doctor in or around Chicago and the other brother became a lawyer. A note left from my mother states that these were uncles of my father (Adolph Joseph Stastny).

As I stated, my great-grandparents had my grandfather, Adolph Otto Stastny (born in Chicago on Nov. 6, 1876 and died January 6, 1956. He was married to my grandmother Emma Kauba (born December 14, 1880 and died November 7, 1966). They are also burried in the Bohemian National Cemetary in Chicago. They were the parents of Adolph Joseph Stastny (born April 14, 1902 and died March 31, 1983), who married the former Edna Rudinger (born June 24, 1904 and died February 19, 198. These were my parents.

However, in a newspaper article that noted my grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary, it stated that Adolph Otto Stastny's father was William J. Stastny. Also, my cousin recently sent me a notice that appeared in an old paper titled "Oznameni umrti" in which it mentions Paula Stastny and had in very large letters "Vaclav Stastny." This article is in a foreign language (probably Bohemian), but I can't read it. Could William J and Vaclav Stastny be the same person?

My great=grandfather, I am told owned a brewery in Chicago and brewed "Stastny Beer." Anyone ever hear of that?

I sure would enjoy obtaining information about my great-grandparents (and beyond), or at least be s

Help !! Hello, I am trying to validate if my surname is common in Slovakia like 'Smith' is in the US. The reason that I ask...Is that I am interviewing two individuals to continue my research in Slovakia and one individual states that my surname is very common and the other states just the opposite. One individual states that there are several Zawrazkys listed in the Slovakia Telephone Register. How can I obtain a listing of the Zawrazky's in the Slovakia Telephone Register?? I have found an Internet site that lists the white pages but you need the correct spelling and the region that the person lives in, which I do not have.
There are a few spellings Zawrazky, Zavracky, Zauratsky, Zawratsky, Zawraztsky and Zavratsky.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks,

Kevin

Mark Bosse asks, "Do they have index of obituries somewhere of Chicago area newspapers?" -- the webmaster replies: Yes. One of most successful projects has been to index the 89,000+ obituaries in the Denni Hlasatel ... visit our CSAGSI store for more information: www.csagsi.org then look for the "What's New" area and click on "CSAGSI Store."

On April 7, Dale Chlumpsky asked about finding his ancestors residence. I found my Grandparents' places of birth on their wedding records. I found the Bohemian church closest to their home in Chicago & checked the LDS records for what info. they might have on them. I found marriage records for them, with their parents' names, their birth places, & baptismal records of their children.
