Note: My great-great grandfather was James Walta (maybe pre-U.S. name was
Wenceslaus), who served in Austro-Hungarian army in war with Italy. He and wife
Clara Stasna Walta and two children immigrated to United States and settled
first in Bluff City, Kansas, then Petersburg, VA, then finally St. Clair and
Washington Counties, Illinois. Three children stayed in Washington and St. Clair
Counties, 3 children returned to Kansas (this time southern), 1 returned to
Virginia, 2 moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area, and one moved to Oregon. We have
been able to trace back to this James Walta, who purportedly came to U.S. with
two brothers. These brothers are supposedly Frank and Joseph, although a Vaclav
also shows up in some old documents. We have located Vaclav's family and Frank's
family, but as yet have nothing but hearsay to prove James was their brother and
even that they were brothers. Have tried in vain to get a copy of James Walta's
obituary from the Nashville [Illinois] Democrat, but all copies I can locate
(even microfilmed) have a shredded page where his obituary is found. Thus no
information can be garnered from it save the date of his death and the possible
name of Wenceslaus as his given name. We know that the Walta was formerly Valta.
James and his wife Clara are buried in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Lively
Grove, Illinois. I was wondering where you all think I should go from here? Is
there a place the society could recommend other than state archives and
Nashville library where obits could be found? Has anyone ever heard of James
Valta/Walta? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

buy Czech greeting cards. I found some Czech Christmas cards at the gift store
at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & library in Cedar Rapids, Ia
site. Try www.ncsml.org. They were $1 Plus S &H. Carol

A&A Note: On November 21, 1998,
Jason Dudycha inquired how he could determine if there were residents in the
Czech Republic with the same last name as his. I have been able to access the
Czech Telephone book in the past at http://www.teldir.com/cz/ with some success.
I was only able to access the names in the Prague phone book, but located more
Panoch's there than in the US.
