From: Russell D. James - neri@dmea.net

A&A Note: My great-great grandfather was James Walta (maybe pre-U.S. name was Wenceslaus), who served in Austro-Hungarian army in war with Italy. He and wife Clara Stasna Walta and two children immigrated to United States and settled first in Bluff City, Kansas, then Petersburg, VA, then finally St. Clair and Washington Counties, Illinois. Three children stayed in Washington and St. Clair Counties, 3 children returned to Kansas (this time southern), 1 returned to Virginia, 2 moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area, and one moved to Oregon. We have been able to trace back to this James Walta, who purportedly came to U.S. with two brothers. These brothers are supposedly Frank and Joseph, although a Vaclav also shows up in some old documents. We have located Vaclav's family and Frank's family, but as yet have nothing but hearsay to prove James was their brother and even that they were brothers. Have tried in vain to get a copy of James Walta's obituary from the Nashville [Illinois] Democrat, but all copies I can locate (even microfilmed) have a shredded page where his obituary is found. Thus no information can be garnered from it save the date of his death and the possible name of Wenceslaus as his given name. We know that the Walta was formerly Valta. James and his wife Clara are buried in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Lively Grove, Illinois. I was wondering where you all think I should go from here? Is there a place the society could recommend other than state archives and Nashville library where obits could be found? Has anyone ever heard of James Valta/Walta? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

A&A Note: On November 21, 1998, Jason Dudycha inquired how he could determine if there were residents in the Czech Republic with the same last name as his. I have been able to access the Czech Telephone book in the past at http://www.teldir.com/cz/ with some success. I was only able to access the names in the Prague phone book, but located more Panoch's there than in the US.

A&A Note: Maria Kulm, Austria?? My ancestor, Mary Deitl, born 3-3-1847 in Maria Kulm, Austria. I have found info on the web that indicates Maria Kulm is now in western Czechoslovakia (western Bohemia) but I cannot find it on any current map. Has the name been changed, is it too small a village to be shown on a map, or does the town no longer exist? Would also appreciate any info on Mary Deitl who came to U.S. as a girl with two sisters, first to Newark, N.J. then to Chicago.

I need to have the area where my faimily origionally came from, what was happening at the time my family immigrated and what they faced when they got to the United States. Can you help? My grand father's name was Joseph Novotny age 43, origionally from Badwies, Bohemia. A&A Note: I have started a family genealogy search to find my roots. WOW! I was really surprized on some of it never would have thought or ever know where my surname origiated if I had not have started my search. I am now working on my grandmothers surname and am stuck! Her name was Anna Machina and lived in Chicago, IL. She was Czech and moved to US in the early 1900's the date I am not sure of. I am unable to locate any additional information. I have checked the SSDeath INDEX and found nothing. If anyone has heard the name MACHINA please give some information on where I might can begin a search for her ancestors. I haven't any family left that knows any information on her so I am alone in this search with very little to go on.

A&A Note: I have seen many queries regarding how to get birth and death certificates from czech archives. There is a way and I've done it. It is very, very slow so patience is required. On the web go to http://www.czech.cz/washington/cons/archivex.htm This is the site for czech archives and getting the ball rolling. Basically, you tell them how much you are willing to spend (usually $50 will cover a lot)and give them all the information you possibly can about who you're researching, where they lived, when, and anything you can lay your hands on. Photocopy everything, remembering that anything you do is less that has to be done on the other side, and send it off. Then you wait.......It took 10 months in my case, but I found what I wanted and then some. Good luck.

A&A Note: I have used the soundex index for the 1920 census to find my family in the Chicagoland area. The soundex index gives family address and enumeration district, page and line. When I went to the 1920 enumeration district list The names were not in the E.D. page or line. In fact the enumeration district had totally different streets than the ones I was looking for. The addresses were on Austin Ave. in Cicero, the enumeration districts I received for the Wabash/Lasalle St area. Could anyone clear this up for me?

A&A Note: Recently I was fortunate to locate relatives in the Czech Republic, who I never knew existed.I visited them last fall and correspond with them often. However for me to write a letter in Czech takes hours and hours using a dictionary and phrase book, and at best end up with poor letter.Likewise if I write to them in English it takes a very long time for them to translate and respond back. So my question is.Is there a service or private individual that could transcribe a letter in English to Czech, and from Czech to English? I would be glad to compensate someone for this service. This would certainly speed up our correspondence and knowledge of each other. I will appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you

A&A Note: According to census records, my great grandfather arrived in the United States in 1886. He attended St. John Nepomuk Czechoslovakian Church here in St. Louis. Knowing that he came from somewhere in Czechoslovakia in 1886, what is the best way to go about searching for his ship record? Were there certain ports of departure that most Czechoslovakians came here from? What about certain ports of arrival here in the US? For instance, did most Czechoslovakians come by way of Bremen or Hamburg and arrive in New York? If anyone knows the answer to this and can help me narrow down the specific lists to check, it would give me a place to start without having to check every incoming ship at every port. Thanks!

A&A Note: I have checked the Illinois Marriages online for early marriages but can't find any of my "bohemian" relatives listed - does anyone know if that means they did not get married in IL or were they able to get married in their own churches without getting a State license? I find it hard to believe that they were born in Chicago, married and had children in Chicago, but they are not listed as getting licenses. Any suggestions as to where I can find "bohemian" marriages?

Entry of Feb 7, 2000 at 22:09 [EST]
From: Maggie Smith - maggiechuck@worldnet.att.net

A&A Note: If you are at a "brick wall" researching your bohemian relatives, please invest in the disk or hardcopy of the Denni Hlasatel Obituaries offered through the CSAGSI. This is the best investment I have made in the 20 years of research. I had no living relatives (that I am aware of)- both my g-grandfather and g-grandmother were born in Chicago, IL in 1877 and 1878 - their parents coming from "bohemia". All I had was their names. No other names. Joseph Skala and Emma Sherry. By requesting copies of obituaries of Sherry's and Skala's I have opened doors and am now getting more names (so far, each of their brothers and sisters and their spouses - not their parents yet)but, I know I will eventually find out where in "bohemia" they came from. For those of us that live outside of IL,(I live in CA), you can request 4 obituaries at $10.00 each in one request (total $40)- it usually only takes 1-2 weeks turn around time. The information is worth every cent. I purchased the disk and printed out the entire index. I followed the directions and set it up to print four columns on each page to cut down on number of pages - truly, treat yourself...and thank you to the CSAGSI for offering this to it's members.

I believe that my Gazy and Bilovesky families were located in Bardejov, Siras, Slovakia before my g-g-grandfather Joseph Bilovesky and his daughters Anna and Emma immigrated to the US around 1902 (His first and second wives were sisters with the last name Gazy-2nd wife named Sophie, mother of Anna). I don't know the origins of Baranak or Ohotnicky, only that my g-g-grandfather was a Stephen Joseph Baranak married to a Mary Ohotnicky. They lived near Pittsburgh and had at least 12 kids (some of the kids spelled it Baronick). I've found Baranak mentioned as maybe being from Nitra, but never confirmed. Does anyone know anything? The webmaster responds: That is typical behavior of some applications. Many applications (Windows NOTEPAD, for example) do not permit you to specify a font and the font it uses does not have the diacritical support you need. You should pursue your problem with FTM, there may be a way to specify a font that supports the diacriticals, or you can at least make a formal request that a future version will. For more information on diacritical font problems, refer to the CSAGSI web page http://csagsi.org/fonts.htm

We know that Frank Brtko, Sr. was in the army of the Austria-Hungary Empire and emigrated to the States in the 1920s and was married to Veronica Pseno. His sister Frances Brtko and we think brothers Julius Brtko and Karl Brtko also came to the U.S. Father was Andrew Brtko and mother Anna Tomck, but they stayed in the home country. As for Kubiks, we know that they came from Orave (Liptovska County) we think Austria-Hungary Empire, but aren't sure. Joseph Kubik emigrated to the Chicago area, but we have very little information. He was married to first wife (first name unknown), but maiden name of Kratka and two kids -- Emmanuel (Emil) and Frank Kubik. He had a second wife, Anna Prisnzy. Emil was eventually adopted by his godparents Joseph Sheron and Anna Krasica after his mom died. We live in Virginia so are having a hard time researching archives in Chicago and IL. I believe all of these cities are in county Tabor. I am researching the last names Jirku and Macek. My Grandfather, Frank Jirku was born in Chrbonin. My Grandmother, Anezka Macek was born in Horni Horice. My Grandparents married at Harvikov in 1903. They lived in Dolni Horice until they emmigrated to the Chicago area in 1907. Because all of these cities are within miles of each other, I would assume all the records would be within the same archival area -- yes? Any ideas, suggestions, directions or advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance... Mary Jirku-Weber

The article also has a great diagram of Lots/Plots in St.Adalbert.

However, I can find no town by that name on my map. Can you help me with any information? The announcement says: zemrel v sobotu, dne 27. prosince 1947, v 6 hodin rano, u veku 80 rodu. A&A Note: One very good source for information regarding some of the last few questions, (Czech neighboorhoods in late 1800's; Czech marriages; Lodges, etc) is the KORENY. The Journal publshed 4 times a year that you receive as part of your membership in the CSAGSI. Having never been to Chicago, I have learned so much from the articles in each of the issues. I joined last year, but have since purchased all the past issues and can not tell you how much my research has progressed because of the information shared in these issues. I too, could not find my great-grandparents births, or marriages or some of their children's births. There were two separate articles on two of the first Czech churches in Chicago - and in one issue, all the Czech churches that have been microfilmed by the LDS church were listed with the film numbers. This past April, I made a trip back to Salt Lake City and viewed those film (choosing both those churches with my fingers crossed). Found all of their births, and marriages (brothers and sisters, parents deaths, etc.). In fact, I was writing so quickly, that when I got home I could not read some of my notes, so I just ordered the film and have them here at the FHC in Sacramento, CA. If you are not a member and just logging on to the website, you should really consider joining. As I mentioned earlier, you receive 4 issues a year of the KORENY and it is by far, one of the best genealogy society "newsletters/journals" I have seen. Trust me, I belong to several states, KY, CA, IL, CO and counties within states. Thanks to all of you that work so hard in making the KORENY possible and in this website. Again, to those looking for births and marriages, your best bet is to look at the microfilm of the Czech churches in Chicago in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Good luck, maggie.

A&A Note: It occurred to me that I was very sketchy with info in my previous post, so I thought I'd add to it. My maternal Grandfather was Henry Paryzek, and he was married to Josephine, whose surname may have been Tsesinsky, your spelling being probably as good as mine. My mother talked of playing in the cemetary, and, reading between the lines, perhaps even doing a little smooching there. My mother then married Irwin James Kostal (or Irvin Vaclav) born Oct 1st, 1911. He later went on to win two Oscars, for musical contributions to the movies "West Side Story" and "Sound of Music." I have traced my father's side of the family somewhat, having discovered a Vaclav Kostal who was born in the town of Ticovice, Moravia, (1855), emigrated here in 1872, and married someone called Katy, no information available. I believe Vaclav was my g-grandfather. I also know my g-g-grandfather was named Pavel, who married a Luzia Kadanka. My Maternal Grandmother's maiden name was, I believe, Hosna. I know almost nothing of them, escept that there is, in the family, a "hosna" look that is easily recognizable. Thus, my family names are Kostal, Hosna, Paryzek and Tsesinsky (sp?). I would be pleased if anyone recognized any of these names and had any information about them. Except for the Kostal branch, I have so far struck out. However, I'm only beginning so it's too soon to be discouraged. Thanks, Irv Kostal

The user name (while under development) is the word "member" (no quotes, lower case). The password is "dobre" (again, no quotes, lower case). When the area is complete, you will be notified of another username and password to use for access.

A&A Note: When I was in the fourth grade in the middle 50's, I was fortunate enough to attend one of the few remaining one-room school houses in the Chicago area. My teacher, who died recently, well into her 90's, was the stereotypical image of the old-time schoolmarm. Always dressed in her best, she would come to school early and often stay late. Although she was capable of a happy face, she usually wore her stern one. This, I suppose, to lessen our thoughts of wrong doing. Moreover, with years of teaching little roughnecks, she knew the secrets of making us learn, like it or not. As I remember, the high point of her day was to play the piano and have us sing old songs like "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". As the music progressed, she would play harder and sing louder, we following her lead. We would usually end with a rousing tune we all loved. And, even now, I can picture the song, saved from the Chicago Tribune Magazine Section, proped on her piano. I don't know if my teacher had Bohemian ancestry, but it was obvious she loved STUDNA PUMPA. Does anyone know where I can find the words and music to this song?

Is there anyone willing to try to help me figure it out if I send it?? The record is very old. Looks like Cucakova but ----- Also I would like to know if the name of BONDORA is of Russian origin, or is it Czec, Slovak, Moravian, Silesia, Ruthenia??????/ There is no further trace of the BONDORA name in the original villages of Setecove or Petrovice. Also I have been told that I had relatives in the town of Lidice that was destroyed by the Nazi's. Has any records survived??? Tracing the names of BONDORA, Cucakova, Lapkasova, Haas, Hricovec, Sebena, Sustekova,. My grandfather and grandmother Bondora/Vlcek immigrated in 1906 to Chicago, Il. on the So. Side a town called Roseland. I have absolutely no information on her except her fathers name and a town called MARIKOVA. Thanks. Bonnie
