A&A Note: I had a recent posting regarding the Krousl/Krauschl/Krcl name with no
responses. Thought I would fill everyone in on the fact that I have found
the family through Archives research in CR. I had tried this once before with
a negative response, but this time I gave more specific instructions as
to where I wanted them to search. This now proves that the Anna Vondrak who died
in Chicago was the sister to my step-gr-grandmother, Theresa Hanus who
died in Belmont Co., Ohio. Persistence pays off!!!

man (I have a picture of him) named JEROME HAMOUS. I am unable to find
any Chicago city directories in this area of the country. Possible they
would be in Madison, WI, but that is a 100 miles away. Could someone check
the 1917 and 1923 directories for me for this name? Would appreciate the help.

Slovak communities in the United States. I am now a resident alien married

still have the original spelling. The original name is Robosky and the spelling
that my family uses is Rebosky. My family's roots are from Greensburg, Pennsylvania. This is

I've seen a lot of Czech websites with women having last names that ended with "-ova"... What is the custom with the surnames of women in the Czech Republic?]
Brabcova is a strictly feminine surname. The masculine equivalent would most likely be Brabec. Generally, the female surname is like an adjective to the male surname. In many cases, this is accounted for by "ova" ending.
Bartos & Bartosova, Krcal & Krcalova, etc. Sometimes, spelling changes a little: Brabec & Brabcova, Zima & Zimova, Janicek & Janickova. When the male surname ends with -y (it is the adjective itself), the female form ends with -a: Novotny & Novotna, Tichy & Ticha.
Only few surnames do not change the form: Jakubu & Jakubu.

A&A Note: Researching materials on the Czech Legion - think this is an exciting moment in history that too few know about. Let me know if you have any advice on resources - particularly photo archives.
Thank you.

A&A Note: While browsing in an antique store the other day, I came across two interesting items. One is a small book of Slovak poems which are handwritten. If anyone is interested, let me know. The other is a scrapbook with obits, wedding articles, etc. The names mentioned are: Kucera, Krivanek, Srail, Jelinek, Kerzicnik, Capek, Cekan, Herda, Dural, Sneberger, Richert, Maly, Kocian, Matteis, Horacek, Marek, Keeran, Stary, Kostal, Paul, Welziek, Kaspar, Hincik, Weskrna, Vilna, Kouba, Slama, Hochwalder, Borovansky, Krauz, Rezek, Quitmeyer, etc. There is also information about the Olympic Ballroom, Hurley Machine Co., Frank I. Kral Dancers Club, and a flyer from 1936 from the Melody Mill Ballroom which was featuring Jack Russell and his Orchestra. All are quite interesting and I am willing to share with whomever is interested.
