From: Bill Rush - WFRush@aol.com

A&A Note: I have a dead end on the Marik family who arrived in Chicago about 1870. I can not find out where they came from closer than "Czechoslovakia". They are buried in the Bohemian National Cemetary and Anton Marik was in a singing society. I theorize that they may have been members of a Czech group, of which there were many. Can anyone suggest where to start a search? I do not know even the names of such groups or where (or IF) their records still exist. Suggestions on where to start would be welcome, as well as advice to not waste time pursuing this line of research. Thanks, Bill Rush

A&A Note: Please help! I am trying to locate the village that my G-Grandmother was born in. It seems to be written as "grci" or "Jrci" on the naturalization papers, or as "grie" or "jrie" on her death certificate. It was listed as Bohemia on everything except the naturalzation papers, which listed both it and Trebon, her husbands home, as Austria. (ca, 1909). Her name was Katerina Jelinek (Jelinkova).

I intend to make it similar to the timeline/history I already have developed on the Slovak village of Sucany at http://members.aol.com:/wfrush/homesuc.htm Please contact me if you share an interest in either Stara Bela or Sucany.

The closes I came to Jrie is Jirice (with a V "hacek" of the "r"), which might make the name sound like "Jrie". I found a Jirice (with a V "hacek" of the "r")closed to Trebon. I hope that helps.

From: Bill - WFRush@aol.com

A&A Note: On the A&A page, you asked what kind of articles readers or Koreny would like to see. I am an easy target, because I know so little that ANYTHING is of interest. However, some of the topics I would like to see include the kinds of things my ancestors would have known or done in their time. Particularly, I am interested in the really common things that I can include in a biographical sketch and be confident that it was something my ancestors did or knew about. In particular, this would include - Juraj Janosi Who was he, some of the truely great legends (many of which appear to be true, his great popularity, and how his story reflects the relationship of the Czechs and Slovaks to the occupying society of the Hungarians and Austrians. - Elizabeth Bathory - great story, probably known to everyone, again showing that aristocrats need not be too concerned about how they treated the peasants. Ludovit Stur - Who was he, why was he important, and what is the relationship between the Slovak language and the survival/emergence of the Slovak nation. The book "Racial Problems in Hungary", why it was important, and the insight that can be gained brom the "snapshot" in time it provides for the early 1900's. The invasions of the mid 1200's - I have found fairly little about the period and how it affected the shape of the landscape, why castles were built the way they were, castle networks, etc. The impact of the Turkish incursions into Hungary in the 1500s and 1600s. Kroje - when did they come into fashion and when did they go out? Can I be fairly sure that if I find the description of my ancestor's kroje that they actually did wear them? Where can I look to find the Kroje of a particular village if I don't know already? How did serfdom end? Most people were probbably serfs of one kind or another. Did they just end up free one day? (I know the answer is no, but would be interested in a discussion of the cahnges between 1780 and 1848 - and the fact that most people remained on their original land for a while afterwards.) This helps understand when and why immigration started "rather suddenly". Technological changes and their impact on daily life. I know nothing about this, but it must have been important to daily life. Railroads, steam engines, mining technology, farming technology, financial institutions (banks, insurance companies), introduction of foods and crops, mill technology, Oops! Sorry - I started getting wound up. I will refine my thoughts a bit and come back later with some more clearly articulated topics. Bill

A&A Note: PC/Mac Polish Font Problem: --------------------------- You write, "...I am working on a project on both a MAC and PC. I am looking for a font in Polish that I can use in both formats so I don't have to keep restructuring the documents..." Yes, this is a problem as the "codepages" for Mac, Windows, DOS, and OS/2 are all different. I have drafted a document to describe this problem: http://members.aol.com/chrismik/csagsi/fonts.htm What I recommend is that you create a "change all" macro in your word processor so that each time you edit a document created on the other platform, you can convert it easily. A&A Note: My ancestors came from Slovakia and settled in Chicago. My great-grandfather came from Lozorno. What little I know is this: He was named Tomas Michalovic, he was born in Lozorno in 1882, and he emmigrated in 1910. I don't know much else, such as what his parents names were, when they wer born and died, exactly when he came to America, etc. Also, I need information on my great-grandmother, born Agnesa Karovic, in 1886, also in Lozorno, I think. If anyone knows anything, please let me know! Many thanks, Mark

A&A Note: Hi folks: MNACEK, RUS, BROZ I'm searching for my family history. My grandfather, Frank MNACEK, came to American after 1900 and before 1922 from Moravia. His brother, Albert, came in 1922. Has anyone an idea of what I mean with the word: "Bohoslavica" or "Bohoslavia" (I'm probably mangling the spelling)?? It may be a place, province, township, town in Moravia that could be the place of his birth. I have this info third-hand from one of my 2nd cousins. I know the name MNACEK is uncommon, perhaps it is angelicized??? Thanks for any help. Yours truly, Loren Bolinger

A&A Note: As the host of our first family reunion, I started digging for family history. My grandparents, Alvina Rehak DeKayfetz is buried in the Bohemian Cemetary, along with most of her family. Actually, they are all cremated and in a vault. I'm extremely interested in all of this and would like to correspond with anyone! My great-grandfather was Vaclav (James) Rehak, born in 1852 in Hororcovice, Checkoslovakia (spelling per the family bible). He was an officer in the Austrian Army. He was a cooper and we have all sorts of patents - the main one being a butter churn with Fleishmans on it! We also have medals from all of these patents. My aunt says that he owned apartment houses or buildings in Chicago. My great-grandmother was Rosalie Houska Rehak, born 1856 in Stara Boleslav, Checkoslovakia. My grandmother was Alvina Rehak Dekaifetz (Kaifetz, DeKayfetz) born October 29, 1892 in Cook County. She had a sister, Blanche, who drowned on a ferry boat in Chicago, and a sister Odella. My grandmother, Alvina DeKaifetz (DeKayfetz) was a nurse while in Chicago. I have pictures of her in her uniform. My aunt, Deloris Rose DeKaifetz, was born April 9, 1915 in Chicago. There was also a child named Alva DeKaifetz, born July 5, 1917 in Chicago, who died of influenza when she was around 2. Another child, Erline Rebecca DeKaifetz Bigbie was born in November 1919 in Chicago. My Aunt Earline (name change again) is alive and well in Pittsburg, Texas. My aunt, Deloris (Dee) died in 1967 in Harlingen, Texas. The family was catholic. This is really all I know. If anyone has information, please e-mail me at jkmartin@e-tex.com. Thanks.

A&A Note: I am searching for information on James Vaclav Loskot. He immigrated to the Chicago area in the late 1890's. They became citizens in Chicago and lived there for about 10 years before moving north to Upper Michigan. They came from Prague (Praha, Bohemia), so I'm not sure if they would be found best by searching Czech or Bohemian information. I was wondering if anyone had come across the name Loskot in their research. There are still many Loskots in the Czech Republic as well as Poland. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A&A Note: My greatgrandparents (George Billik and Anna Szmandra) said they came from a town in Galicia named "Kamionka" which was part of Austria when they left. They were also of the Greek Catholic (sometimes called Byzantine Catholic) faith, which is prominent in Western Ukraine. The only part of their story which doesn't fit is that they claimed their ethnicity was SLOVAK. Since they first settled in Western Pennsylvania and then in a Hungarian neighborhood of Cleveland they spoke a number of Eastern European tongues (including Polish and Hungarian). The foods they prepared had Polish names (pierogi, kilbasi, etc.). The silver coin my greatgrandmother brought with her from the old world is from the Kingdom of Hungary (not the Austrian Empire). I was recently in the Western Ukrainian town of Kamenka Bugskaya (which I believe is the Kamionka they said they came from) but the people there said SLOVAKS never lived there (although many Poles did and still do). My question: can these ancestors really have been SLOVAKS or did they just not know enough to call them what all the other evidence appears to say they were: RUTHENIANS?! Anyone recognize the ethnicity of their names? Or, maybe I have the wrong Kamionka? Thanks.

The ShtetlSeeeker will help locate central european places. Once on the ShtetlSeeker page scroll down to towns, it is so easy to use. Especially helpful to narrow down a search when so many villages seem to have the same name. The Daitch-Mokotoff soundex really helps ! Let me know if this helps you as much as it did me.

But to answer you question as simple as I can is to start with what you know Yourself! Work back from generation to generation. Look at Census reports, Death notices, birth records, etc. I hope that helps, Joe
