A&A Note: I am searching catholic church records and Cook County indexes for marriage licenses of Kubu, Cerveny, Zasadil, and Belek family members from the late 1800's and have run into discrepancies. Many people opted for a civil wedding; I can usually find them listed on the county index. The couples married in the church were not listed in the index! Did the catholic church marry couples without a license? In one case a couple married in the church, had several children, and acquired a marriage license about 15 years later. Are occurrances like these common for that time period?

A&A Note: Hi everyone, I am attending the University of Oregon for a master's degreee in Sociology. It has become a commonly accepted belief that interest in one's European ethnic identity is somehow a new phenomena. Anyone living in Chicago in the 50s, 60s, and 70s could hardly think of European ethnic identification as a new thing, and I would like to find "proof" - ways to show them the vital, lively, and distinctive ethnic flavors of Chicago in the not so distant past. I have been looking at all kinds of statistical info, but they are missing what I want - a sense of ethnic neighborhood solidarities. Do you have any idea where I might find this information? Thank you to anyone who can help. Katie

A&A Note: My husband's father's records say that he was born in the village of "Molnar Vagaso". (That is what the handwriting looks like.) When he was alive, he said that he was born near Budapest. We found a town called Molnaryvagasa, but it was 200 miles away from Budapest, so it cannot be the correct one. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery?

A&A Note: A Reply To: M.Mastney Many Czech's settled in the Berwyn/Cicera area as your instructor believes however their numbers are dwindling a little more each year. Many now reside in the Villages of North Riverside, Lyons, Brookfield, Westchester, Downers Grove & even Naperville. Each of these towns have a sizable Czech Population. My Parents were part of the Berwyn/Cicero Czech population & were graduates of Morton East High School in 1941. Let us not forget Western Electric where almost everyone of Bohemian decent had a relative who worked at one time or another. Anyone familiar with Berwyn Illinois would also know that on Cermak Road there was a Bank & a Funeral Home on just about every corner, & there was more money in that cluster of banks then in any other place in the country at the time. You see, us Czech's were notorious for saving & we have great respect for our dead. Chrastka Memorial Chapels was our family's choice in Funeral homes & just to name a few in the area there are Svec & son's, Marik & Son's, Nosek & sons all believed to still be in operation on Cermak Road which was named after Anton Cermak, Mayor of Chicago. & of course not to mention our final resting place of choice,Bohemian National Cemetery & Crematorium in Chicago Illinois where the late Mayor Cermak is also interred.

A&A Note: My Czech ancestors were Jezek and possibly Sedlacek. The Jezek family was allegedly from a small village near Prague. My great grandmother, Josephine Jezek received a medical degree from Prague around 1890-1895(for some reason 1894 sounds right). Within a year from receiving her degree she came to America with her husband, Francis and son, Frank. In America they went by the last name of Sedlacek but we've heard rumors that my great grandfather was fleeing the government and my have taken on an assumed name when coming aboard ship. What I have is info from the who's who of Saline Co. NE. It gives info about Frank Sedlacek who is my great uncle. It says that he was born in CZ on July 24, 1890. It further states that his parents, Francis and Josephine Sedlacek brought him to America in 1890. They first settled in Berwyn, IL and moved to Crete, NE in 1893. Frank had 2 siblings born after arriving in Crete, Mary (my grandmother) b. 1899 d. 1969. and John (I don't know any dates for John). Can you provide any help or guidance or where I can go from here? bkerst@digitex.net

A&A Note: I am beginning to research my genealogy. My mother and I recently found a military paper from my g-father, STEFAN LACKO(B June 10, 1881 died Feb. 1, 1961)We need a bit of translation as the military paper is in slovak, we believe. The paper states "PRINTED IN SLOVEM - SLOVENSKY" My mother can make out most of the words as she spoke czech as a small child. (What she believes is czech as the dialects are so different) We are trying to make out where he is from and on two descriptions on the paper are "POLITICKY OKRES - RUZOMBEROK" and the next line is "OBEC - STANKOVANY" does that mean city, state?? one other description is "Zupa XIX Lipt. Sv. Mikulus" She has no clue what that means?? St. Mikalus?? a church affiliation? Two other lines are "Rok Narodenia 1881" she said that is birth date or year?? The next line is "ODVODNY ROCNIK 1904/23" Does that have something to do with his date into the military? What war or conflict was happening at that time and where is Ruzomberok or Stankovany? His father was also named Stefan Lacko and the paper describes "MENO MATKINO or MENO A RODME" (relative or mother right? as SUZUZANA KLENCER. If anyone has info on those names, that as well we are grateful for!! Thank you so very much for your help!! Kind Regards

I have been given conflicting info-- my Mother-in-law says we are Sloakian, but my husbands(have been told) g-father was born in Czechoslovakia. When he came to US, the census says his name is YANHACK (census are notorious for spelling mistakes but---) and is from Hungary. So, 3 different possibilities. I have found where someone says the spelling could be Janak. Any leads in finding ethnic spelling variations? Thank you!
