A&A Note: Does anyone know if the town of Stoborice has had a name change? I got this name from the CSA insurance application of my grandfather John Janca. I have seen other old obituaries with the same name, but have not been able to locate it on a current map, even one on the scale of 1:50,000. It does seem to be listed on the Stetleseeker site, not on a current map. Help on this, or if anyone has relatives from this town, I would like to hear from you. Dorothy in Az

A&A Note: Looking for information on Czech families who settled in Illinois/Indiana at the turn of the century, specifically , surnames Rusin and Owsky. Frank Rusin (shortened from a longer name, I'm not sure what...) was born in Czech, moving to America sometime in the early 1900s for a pre-arranged marriage (as per custom, according to my grandma). He married Anna Ruth Owsky, who was born in Illinois. Not sure of birth dates, but they settled in Terre Haute, Indiana. Of their children, my grandpa, Steven Edward Rusin, was born there in 1917. Frank died in 1947, and Anna in 1960. Both are buried in Terre Haute, I think. I would appreciate any other information on this family, or other Czech families who came to midwestern America in early 1900s and why they came. Thanks! Email careyann@excite.com or postal mail to PO Box 2791, Muncie, IN USA 47307.

A&A Note: A recent posting (1/4/99) on the Cook Co RootsWeb site: "The Czech & Slovak American Genealogy Society of Illinois has available the book "Locations of Chicago Roman Catholic Churches 1850-1990" by Jack Botcher that does indicate which churches burned in 1871, where their records (if survived) are currently housed, as well as maps indicating locations. This has proven a valuable resource for me and might answer a lot of your questions as well." Is this true? I don't see it in your bookstore list. What is the cost?

A&A Note: Any ideas on how to find the newspaper serving a community from afar? I'm interested in finding which paper would feature the obituaries in Grayslake, Ill. which is a small community north of Chicago and west of Waukegan. This was the home of a 102 year old Spalenka who died on 1/17/97. I don't have a clue who this Spalenka would be. I found the name from Social Security benefit data base.

A&A Note: Hope someone can help me,please: One branch of my VETESNIK family lived in UTELENE U(near) LITOMERIC(town). This is the way the researcher spelled it. Also, does anyone know of a Catholic Parsonage located in SOBOTEC U JICINA? Again, I can't seem to put a location to these two place names. I have done several searches but no luck. From: Bob White - Rdwhite17@aol.com

A&A Note: I have been researching my ancestors who emigrated from Bohemia to Cedar Rapids Iowa in the 1870's. My questions are {1}(why),if there might be a generic answer, and (2) why go to Cedar Rapids Iowa? I know that BOHAC, for example, came from Teleci, Bohemia. I do not yet know where the other surnames (HAYEK, and PETRANEK) came from. It appears that they all boarded ships at Hamburg, Germany Thank you Bob White Chula Vista CA PS: I have been involved with Genealogy for a very short time, and have just started looking at our Czech roots.

The search can be done for text 'beginning with' or 'contains'.

A&A Note: On Jan 20, 1999, Kurt Kremlick (kremlick@juno.com) asked: "How can a non-member post a query? Or must one be a member to post one? 2 sides of same question." The answer is that members can post their "queries," i.e., surnames and villages researching, on the member's page. The A&A page is for anyone to post information of interest to everyone or a general question. The short answers are that members may have their information posted on the member's pages and anyone can post a question, answer, or information tidbit on the A&A page. The A&A page is not a place for queries. Hope that helps, Regards, Chris Miksanek, CSAGSI webmaster.

From: Phil Baer - philbaer@aol.com

A&A Note: I am trying to trace my Slovak heritage and pass the information along to decendants. My great-grandfather's name was John Medvecz; he came to the US and lived in Streator,IL approx 1890-1900. John's spouse was Anna Myarski and they had 7 children (John, George, Paul, Joseph, Andrew, Anna, and Mary). The oldest (my grandfather) John M. Medvecz was born March 9, 1893 in Streator, IL. The family moved to Robbins,Ohio about 1900. I am trying to find out where John Medvecz was born in Slovakia, and when he came to the US. Any information, helpful hints, or clues would be reatly appreciated! Also, any information about my great-grandmother Anna Myarski or her parents, and information about Slovak immigrants to Illinois that may help in my searches, would be much appreciated. Part of my difficulty has been that the family members changed the family name several times: from Medvecz to "Bear" sometime after arriving in the US; to "Bare" in 1929; and to "Baer" in the 1930's, while some of the records still used the Medvecz name (my great-grandfather's grave stone). Thanks in advance for any help or information you may be able to provide. Phil Baer (281)485-4889 or e-mail.

From: Mark Tonn - BNSFHOG@AOL.COM

A&A Note: Dear Czech Cousins, I am having a tough time finding anything about my Jewish ancestors. I do not mean to inquire specifically about one individual, but would like to know why my Czech-Austrian family changed thier name from Rotkopf to Stern when they came to New York in the late 1800's?? Obviously the two names do not mean the same thing, right? I heard one time, that Jewish people bought a new name when coming to America. Is that true? Anyway, I am trying to find some websites that deal with Jewish Czech-Austrians, and the history of the Cheb/Eger area. Additionally, I sent my application for records search to Praha over a year ago, and no word from them yet. Should I be worried that it is taking this long?? Thank you in advance for any and all help. Mark Tonn

A&A Note: I am trying to trace my husband's family. I have immigration information but have not been able to trace the family back to it's place of origin. I am a novice, but did receive information indicating that my husband's family may have had to change their name to be able to get out of the country. My question is would this be a real possibliity? And if so, where do I go from here? I am not looking for someone to trace my family but do need help on what to do. The basic information is as follow: My husband's great grandfather was named Wawrzyniec Madrzejewski. The name was changed to Lawrence Modrak. He was born in Kaliska, Slupiecka-Poland-Russia and emigrated to the USA from Bremen, Germany to the port of New York, NY. The family settled in Chicago, Ill. I have the vessel name, Burogeawa, but have not been able to trace this name in any logs. Thank you in advance for any assistance one might be able to give. barney@novagate.com

A&A Note: I have a second cousin who has recently (Oct 98) immigrated from the Czech Republic to the Chicago area. My family and I will be visiting the Chicago area around Easter (April 1-3). Does anyone have suggestions on how I might go about locating my cousin while in town. Is there someplace in Chicago that foreign visitors must go to register their name and current address? ....Thanks!

A&A Note: I know I will sound very dumb, but where do I go to find Naturralization papers? I am just starting out and do not have a whole lot to go on. I don not know anyone who knows when my great-grandparents came to the US, but I do know they had all three of their children in Iowa and the oldest was born in 1897, so I know they were here then. Any ideas on where to start? or what to look for? Thanks so much Tammy

A&A Note: Can anyone help me with information on the Zajicek funeral home in Chicago, which was in operation in 1893, at the time of my g-g-grandfather's death. Was it perhaps purchased by another business and now operates under a different name? Where was it located? Thank you.

The spelling has been recorded the following ways since the families arrival in the U.S: Schlegel, Slegl, Schlogel, Schlegrl, Slegrl, Schlager, Schleger, and for the past 100 years it has been Sleger. The family of Peter and Catherine (Svacina or Kubsch) Sleger emmigrated from Sedlice, Domazlice in the year 1870. They entered the U.S. and settled in Manitowoc County Wisconsin. The couples children:Adelbert, John, Matthias, Mary, Katarina, and Stephan accompanied their parents. Any help anyone could send my way would be terrific!
