A&A Note: When applying to a Czech Archive for genealogical research, the application (CSAGSI sample) asks for the "limit on costs". Does anyone have any "ball-park" idea of costs related to level of research? Are we talking tens, hundreds or thousands of dollars? Am I correct that in normal practice the research is back through the generations until information on the ancestry line is no longer available in that district?

Based on that report, you can have have them dig deeper or stop. That has worked for me. Others will ikely have different experiences.

From my understanding, most of the names logged at Ellis were taken directly from the ship's logs. As far as the Hruza surname, it sounds very Bohemian and I have found several Hruzas in the Chicago Denni Hlasatel Obituary Index. Keep at it and good luck!

A&A Note: Dear Edward William,
At the end of last year 2000 I have come across your message:" I would like to know more information on my last name Eleder....".
About 30 to 40 people named Elleder or Eleder live in Bohemia (the Czech Republic now) at present. They live in the following towns: Prague, Plzen, Tabor, Veseli, Strakonice and Brno. The name Elleder you can also find in Germany (Munchen) and Austria (Wien), but not as often as in the Czech Republic.
Dominic Elleder (or Eleder) brother of my gr.,gr.,gr. -grandfather Anton Elleder (the name was written sometimes Elleder or Eleder) emigrated to the U.S.A during the 19th century (probably in the first half of the 19th cent. ). No information on him in my family since that time. He might be in the National Cemetery in Chicago (?)
I am interested in genealogy of my family and I strongly believe it would be a good idea to change the information and knowledge about my and your family. I have written a paper about … recently. It is in Czech language, however and translation would require a lot of time.
Yours sincerely, Libor Elleder (your far relative perhaps?)
P.S. Let me ask you if you speak some Czech?

Through her local library, she can request up to 5 reels of the Denni Hlasatel newspapers at one time, from the Illinois State Historical Library. There is no cost associated with obtaining the reels. All she has to do is give the librarian the date the obit should have appeared in the newspaper (that is the date of the newspaper she will need). It will take several weeks to receive the reels from Springfield and her library will keep the reels for her to view for 2 weeks.

A&A Note: Just discovered ths Web Page--and so excited! The Bohemian side of my family includes the names; LOPATA,HELLER and NOVAK--all from Berwyn (or other areas of Chicago). My grandmother's parents, were from Prague and Vienna. My g-grandfather's name was -JAN LOPATA--and he owned a hardware(general store),in Berwyn,in early 1900's.My grandmoter's sister,Stephanie, married ANTON HELLER--who along with his brother OTTO HELLER--at one time owned the morturery, across the street from "THE BOHEMIAN NATIONAL CEMETARY". My great-uncle,ANTON, was an artist--and drew elaborate representations for the head-stones,in the cemetary. I have only visited it once--where several family members are buried. ANTON and STEPHANIE HELLER'S daughter,MARGARET--married CLAUDE NOVAK,a prominent surgen--in Chicago. I have looked through all the listing--but have not seen these names mentioned. Would like to get back in touch with my Czech relatives! Any help appreciated! Thanks, Janice (Sarasota, Florida)

There is a Slovak Pride Book, which lists the names of people who emigated from towns in Slovakia. The book is located at www.iarelative.com Searching in Slovakia. Ms. Helene at helenezx@aol.com is a Bratislava county correspondent in the SLRP and the Slovak Pride Book founder, who was with a tour in the Poland towns that were in the Czechoslovakian boundaries. I was quite surprised to find the Jewish cemeteries are recieving a great deal of support from the Czech government or their renovation, upkeep and cataloging. As a result, my research was quickly accomplished.
While doing my research chiefly in Rakovnik County, I was surprised to find a number Spanish Jewish names like
Peres, Perales, Saulus and Solis. Was there a large immigration of Jews from Spain to Czech in the 1800s or perhaps earlier?

(as written on translated birth record) Or Prislopu okres Volovoje, zupa Marmaros, Podkarp. Rus. (as written on un-translated birth record). A few letters which document his birth records carry the postage from Rumania. Anecdotally, my great grandfather Michael told my dad that he lived one day's donkey ride from Poland.

A&A Note: On Jan 18, 2001, Debra - artlay@toast.net - asked: "I have information that my ancestors were from a small village named Trezov. However, I do not know if this is in the Czech Republic,Slovakia and or Hungary or Austria. I also do not know if this small village has changed names oveer the course of time." ---- JS responds: I read your ask and answer query (18 Jan 2001) in the CSAGSI-Chicago web site. The village name Trezov (hook over r not shown) doesn't sound Czech; there may have been a z or an s in front that may have been removed in the US. On that premise, I found the village Strezov. If you examine the map links, you may own letters or have verbal information that will connect you to that part of the Czech Republic. Find the internet site: http://www.mapy.atlas.cz click on mapy, then when you see 'NAJD NA MAPE' (find on the map) type strezov, and click 'hledej' (search). On the next page up click on strezov. You will see a small map with an arrow pointing to strezov. In the lower left hand margin you will also see 'mala mapa' with a down arrow. Choose the last entry, velka mapa (large map) and you will have an enlarged view of the region. The river or near by villages may be something you've heard of. Or, it may be just a wild goose chase. Have fun. --Regards, JS

I don't have a whole lot of information. My mother said someone bought the place and turned it into living quarters.
My relative Klotilda Marek Mikulecky died there, and I have her death certificate. She died in 1962 after being there for 6 years. So it operated at least as far back as 1956. The addess was 5061 North Pulaski Road. I cannot make out the superintendent's signature -- looks like James Šunarn. The doctor who attended her seems to have done so for just the time she was at the home: Ludvik A. ?Brzack? of 4344 West Lawrence Avenue.
