On September 6th, the Chicago Historical Society's Carol Turchan presented, "Preservation of Paper and Photographic Collections" to a standing-room-only crowd of more than 160 members and guests.

Evelyn Krenek Fergle recalls...
Carol Turchan, Conservator at the Chicago Historical Society, gave a very informative slide presentation on "Preservation of Paper and Photographic Collections" at the September 6th meeting of CSAGSI at the Brookfield Village Hall.

Ms. Turchan analyzed differing historic forms of photography from the daguerreotype and wet plate processes up to present forms.

She commented on how time, heat, excessive light, improper storage, etc... can damage or deteriorate photos and documents.

Recommendations were given on how to repair damaged or fading photos and use of proper archival materials was emphasized for the storage of collections.

Two of the recommendations made were 1)When writing on photographs, one should use a soft lead pencil and not a pen; and, 2) Care should be given to hanging framed photos on inside walls in a room and not in direct sunlight.

After the program, the 160 members and guests enjoyed the delicious pastry table set up by Mary Ellen Zuro, assisted by Joan Miller and Mary Sherry.
