CSAGSI June 22, 1996 Meeting

On June 22nd, Marlene Kettley of the Naperville LDS Family History Center presented the topic, "Using the Resources at the Family History Center(LDS)."

Types of material available at the LDS

1. Research outlines describing records available by state, country, ethnic origin.
2. Map information.
3. Fiche. Including IGI, International Genealogical Index or as Marlene quipped, "dead people who are related to a Mormon."
4. Microfilm: Gazatteers (permanent collection); Atlases (permanent collection).
5. Published genealogies ordered by locality and surname.
6. Other films: Short-term loan: something an individual has ordered (3 week loan). Check the gray cabinet before ordering, someone else may already have; Long-term: six months; Indefinite: (very rare).
7. Computer records:
   Ancestral File
   Card Catalog (most useful)
   Published genealogies
   Film and fiche indexes (Chicago Archdiocese records are available)
8. Ancestral File (A collection of genealogies submitted by others). A file available on Family Search. Some info may or may not be accurate based on what was typed-in. Submitted in GEDCOM format (anyone can contribute). PAF is generally used, but any application that exports into GEDCOM is acceptable.

Types of records:

• Original Records
• Compiled records (Anything compiled by someone else is suspect)
• Background Information
• Finding Aids: like indexes, cross-references, etc... which point to other records

Record Categories:

• Historical (time line) -- what was going on which may have affected the individual.
• Topographical Geography (land and waterways) -- did the land play a role in the individual's life?
• Jurisdiction (legislative)
• Event (a noteworthy event in the life of the individual)
