On January 27, 1996, CSAGSI's treasurer and bulletin chair, Dr. Paul Valasek, presented his exciting talk on steamships and the immigrant's experience. We are pleased to present the handout from that presentation here.


Historical Outline of the Major Steamship Lines

CUNARD (England) Founded in 1839 by Samuel Cunard as the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. Home offices Liverpool, England. Still in existence today.

Major ships: Lusitania, Mauretania, Aquitania, Carpathia, Saxonia, Coronia, Ivernia, Slavonia, Ultonia,

Ship names usually end in the suffix -nia and are place names. Exceptions, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth I & H.

WHITE STAR (England) Founded in 1869 by Thomas Ismay. Ship yards located at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Merged with Cunard, became Cunard/White Star Line on January 1, 1934o

Major ships: Olympic, Titanic, Britannic, Majestic, Celtic, Oceanic, Teutonic, Cymric, Ionic, Corinthic, Cedric, Baltic, Adriatic, Arabic

Ship names usually ended in the suffix -ic and are adjectival.

HAMBURG AMERIKA LINE (HAPAG) (Germany) Founded in 1847, chairman was Albert Ballin starting in 1880. Home port was Hamburg Germany. Still in existence today, merging with Nord-Deutscher Lloyd. Company called Hapag-Lloyd.

Major Ships: Deutschland, Imperator, Bismarck, Hamburg, Pennsylvania, Pretoria, Patricia, President Lincoln, President Grant, Amerika, Kaiserin Auguste Victoria

NORTH GERMAN LLOYD (Germany) Founded in 1857 H. Meier. Home port was Bremen, Germany. Merged with Hamburg-Amerika Line.

Major Ships: Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, Columbus, Europa, Bremen, Friedrich der Grosse, Konigin Luise, Konig Albert, Grosser Kurfurst, Prinzess Irene, Kaiser Friedrich, Kronprinz Wilhelm, Kronprinzessin Cecilie, Rhein, Main, George Washington

CANADIAN PACIFIC (Canada-England) Home office Liverpool, Founded in 1886 for Trans-Pacific travel and 1903 for trans-Atlantic service. Was formed to complement the Canadian Paciric Railroad.

Major Ships: Empress of Ireland, Empress of Britain, Empress of India, Empress of China, Empress of Scotland

Ships usually carried the name "Empress of" preceding a country.

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE (Rotterdam, Holland) Founded in 1855, also sailed from Amsterdam.

Major Ships: Rotterdam, Maas, Amsterdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Statendam, Rijndam, Noordam, Potsdam

Ship names usually ended in suffix -danl

RED STAR LINE (England - Liverpool)

Major Ships: Vaderland, Kroonland, Finland, Zeeland, Lapland Ship names usually ended in suffix -land
